I recently adapted a four speed Series E gearbox to my 1937 Sports which has proved very successful. It certainly gives more flexibility at traffic lights where often as not you have to move off at 2 mph and with a three speed box have to decide whether to double the clutch or stop to obtain 1st gear. With four speeds the second gear will enable you to crawl along at low speeds not having to engage 1st gear.
However I struck a problem not envisaged when the sports went back on the road. The speedo was reading 20mph faster. Following along in a recent Morris run the needle was going off the clock, so looking at getting the speedo recalibrated I was quoted $200.
After some thought I wondered what the difference was between the Morris 8 and the Series E speedo, even though one was twice the size. Borrowing one of each from the parts shed which were broken, and removing them from their casings I found they were exactly the same unit.
Even the calibrations were the same and in line with the E having a longer needle. On the strength of this I was able to screw the early dial on to the E mechanism, shorten the dial needle and reassemble into the early casing.
For less than $20 which was the cost of a good E speedo, the vehicle now reads correct again.
Wasn't I lucky to strike a later speedo with the same mileage as my original!
I thought this might save someone else spending money needlessly.
Cheers
John Henderson.
