The Morris Eight Tourer Club
of New Zealand (Inc)

My old Morris

Back in 2003 I was looking for a hobby; fishing took a back seat as winter set in.
My better half suggested doing up an old car? If that was my thing.
Well a golden opportunity stood before me, how could I refuse.
Funny thing was a friend at work suggested joining the Morris 8 tourer club the week before, and that there was a series e in need of restoration for a couple of bucks.
This was not  my  scene , as I wanted a series 1 with more class.
The following week was the annual swap meet, and always a good bargain to be had.
Low and behold a series 1 sat on two trailer loads of what most would call rubbish.

Only a green horn would take on such a huge task.
Well the chassis was rotten to the core, as luck would have it I managed to obtain a spare one.
Now knowing the replacement chassis was a good one the challenge was on.
There was heaps of welding that needed to be done, and being an older car there was loads of thick steel to weld to.

Mostly the lower body needed the touch of bronze welding.
Then the dirty task of sanding down to bare metal. A little panel beating and a handful of bog.
Now the good stuff, a real hard coat of primer, a quick sand,
What I now needed was a real fine and little wind, so I could apply the topcoats, and in the middle of winter the chances were pretty slim.

Well luck would have it; the following weekend was a ripper.
Loads of sun, no wind, and a temperature of 16 degrees.
Four litres of top coat was placed upon the car that day, it looked real great as the project was coming to an end.

I left the interior to a professional, as it is easy to make mistakes, witch comes a very high price.
There were moments when things did not go my way, and was ready to give it all up.
Getting the car on the road was relatively easy, being a x mechanic; I had all the knowledge of replacing the braking system, and all other components.

What seemed an impossible task and many folks said it was not worth the effort, i managed to put these two trailer loads of bits into a roadworthy car.
I spent half an hour every night an odd day at the weekend, and finished the project in 6 months.
I have had a great time restoring it, and mostly a load of fun driving it.

Yep I got the bug, to date I have restored an Austin 8, another Series 1, and an Australian series e van.
And my recent project a Series e Tourer.
Happy motoring.
