Engine Recondition

Timaru club member Bruce Grierson was faced with an engine recondition after a piston collapsed in his Series 1 Morris 8 two seat sports. The engine had already been "converted" to a Series E short block (shell bearings) so it was only a matter of buying a second hand Series E block and reboring to +0.060". The block and cylinder head were planed, crankshaft ground to 0.040", new pistons, rings and shell bearings fitted. Between the old and replacement block he was able to salvage a set of good valves, the guides and springs were in good order.

With the engine out Bruce took the opportunity to work his way through the car making repairs where necessary. One innovation, the engine bay side plates held in place with bolts and nuts. Bruce brazed the nuts to the plate.  If tappet adjustment is required it's only a matter of taking off the wheel and unscrewing bolts to remove the plate.
