THE BODY OF THE CAR TAKES SHAPE

This remarkable machine is a mechanical carpenter.  The wood is fed into it and is automatically sawn to the required size and shape.  It is possible for eighteen different cuts to be made in one operation.

The body of the car now begins to take shape.  The wooden frame and the steel panels are brought together in a construction called a jig, which holds the parts in place while they are united.

MAKING CUSHIONS AND SMOOTHING PAINT

A large department of the factory is devoted to making the car comfortable to ride in.  Here we see the cushions and interior coverings being made.

The bodies receive numerous coats of paint, and the flat finish, which is necessary before the final coat is applied, is secured by skilled workers who rubbed down the primary coats with very fine glass-paper and a flow of water.
