The Morris Eight Tourer Club
of New Zealand (Inc)

The 1939, 2nd Annual Rally of the Morris 8/40 Owners Club

Allan Perkins, Queensland Morris Register newsletter Editor has sent over some old photo's of the 2nd Annual Rally of the Morris 8/40 Owners Club at the Southport (Gold Coast area) showgrounds in 1939. The rally was sponsored by Howards Ltd Brisbane who were the Morris distributors for Queensland with sub agents all over the State.

Other photo's show 24  8/40's plus a couple of larger sedans all parked tail in at 45 degrees along the kerb. Photo's  were taken in the main street of MacKay. The original a composite of four photo's

and continue, 24 in all.

Mystery surrounds the 8/40. Allan Perkins thinks it comes from a general advertisement by Aussie Morris agents suggesting the Morris 8 was a 40 miles per hour cruising vehicle. There is an article in a magazine somewhere, when Allan finds it he will send the detail over.

Many thanks for the article and photo's Allan they are part of Queensland and Australian motoring history.

The Morris Register of Queensland hosted the 9th National Rally for Australian State Registers in 1994 at Stanthorpe.

Queensland is again gearing up for the National Rally, this time at Caloundra, a coastal city and holiday area about 95 km north of Brisbane.  The event  to be held over Easter 2002.

Hi Peter.
I'm not an expert on all things Morris (far from it.)
Asked a friend tonight about the Morris 8/40 title used here in Australia.
His reply was, " Even in the UK known only as ser.8 . The term 8/40
originated in the eastern states of Australia, Queensland and New South
Wales, Vehicles built in those states carried a bonnet emblem Morris 8/40.
Victoria and South Australian built vehicles known and badged as Morris 8.
The theory behind the 8/40 tag was, 8 horse power, 40 MPG. Other states
followed with the 8/40 name with the introduction of the ser. E"

There may be others with more info on the matter, and I would be pleased
to hear those renditions of the matter too.

Some thing I would like to hear about is the history of The Ruskin Body
Builders. Haven't heard too much here in South Oz.

Barry Booth.
