The
Morris Eight Tourer Club
4X4
vehicles assembled by Mount Somers shearing shed where those taking part
could have a cuppa and look at memorabilia including rock samples from
Mount Somers, a once active volcano. |
Picnic
lunch overlooking Mt Somers. There are coal, silica sand and limestone
deposits. The mountain is designated a conservation area (DOC),
with walking tracks. |
63 four
wheel drive vehicles and one green 1929 Ford model A pick-up snake their
way across country on Inverary Station, breath taking views in every direction. |
Failed to
negotiate the mud and towed out. Our silver Suzuki (second in line) made
it ok and the Model A behind us made it look easy. Prior to this
we criss crossed the north branch of the Hinds River. At one crossing
the Model A stopped and the driver topped up the radiator improvising with
a plastic bag. |
On the
way back to Inverary Homestead, we stopped to admire the view of Ashburton
Gorge. Approximately 35 km as the crow flies is Mount Potts Station
near Lake Clearwater, one of the locations for the film trilogy "Lord
of the Rings" to be filmed in the Mount Sunday area. Note the
deer fenced paddock. |
On the
way back to Timaru we stopped at a restored early settlers cottage at an
old lime quarry between Inverary and Mt Somers. The gentleman on
the left was involved with the restoration. He said that corrugated
iron was placed on top of the thatch for protection. In the
mid 1980's a big snowstorm almost collapsed the roof. Gentleman's
wife centre, Pam McAuley on the right.
What is not shown is the mud down the left (passenger) side, it stayed on for several days so my work mates could see "Wee Silver" had been cross country in 4 wheel drive (high and low) not just driven on tar seal and through puddles in the works car park. |
